Ruth Williams is the author of Flatlands (Black Lawrence Press, 2018) and Conveyance (dancing girl press, 2012). Her poetry has appeared in Michigan Quarterly Review, jubilat, Pleiades and Third Coast, among others. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of English at William Jewell College and an editor for Bear Review.

Dedria Humphries Barker straddles the line between colors and cultures. She is totally America. Identifying as a black Detroiter, she recognized the white in and around her when she moved to Michigan. In her work as a journalist, writer, editor, publisher, educator and public speaker, she considers the issues of mixed-race families in the midwestern United States. She’s educated, with a Master of Arts degree in English from Wayne State University in Detroit. She studied writing at, among others, the Squaw Valley Community of Writers and the Iowa Writer’s Workshop with the late James McPherson. Her writing career started at the Michigan Chronicle, Detroit, continued as a staff writer for Gannett Co., Inc. newspapers, and culminated as a professor of English at Lansing Community College in Michigan. Her work has appeared in anthologies and national and regional markets, including The Beiging of America: Personal Narratives of Mixed-Race Americans and Black Lives Have Always Mattered; Redbook magazine, The Detroit News, Salon.com, Literary Mama, Sundry: A Journal of the Arts, the Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature and the Ohio and Michigan historical societies. Her first book, Mother of Orphans: The True and Curious Story of Irish Alice, a Colored Man’s Widow, is the story of her Irish great-grandmother who married a black man in 1899 in Cincinnati and, when widowed in 1912, put their three black children in an orphanage.
