Akua Lezli Hope, a third-generation New Yorker, is a creator who uses sound, words, fiber, glass, metal, and wire to create poems, patterns, stories, music, ornaments, adornments and peace whenever possible. Her awards include two Artist Fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, a Ragdale U.S.–Africa Fellowship, a Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Walker Foundation Scholarship to Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, among others. She is a Cave Canem fellow. She received an Artists Crossroads Grant from The Arts of the Southern Finger Lakes for her project “Words in Motion,” which placed poetry on the buses of New York’s Chemung and Steuben counties. Her poem “Metis Emits” won the Science Fiction Poetry Association’s short poem award. In 2017 she was a Rhysling Award finalist.
Them Gone, her poetry collection, was published by The Word Works Press in 2018. Her first collection, Embouchure: Poems on Jazz and Other Musics, won a Writer’s Digest Book Award for poetry. She is published in numerous literary magazines and national anthologies, including: The 100 Best African American Poems; Too Much Boogie: Erotic Remixes of the Dirty Blues; Revise the Psalm: Work Celebrating the Writing of Gwendolyn Brooks; Killens Review; Eye to the Telescope; Faerie Magazine; Andromeda Spaceways; The Crafty Poet II; The Cossack Review; Silver Blade; Tiny Text; Breath and Shadow; Stone Canoe; Three Coyotes; The Year’s Best Writing; Writer’s Digest Guides; Dark Matter, the first anthology of African American Science Fiction; Erotique Noire, the first anthology of black erotica; and Ordinary Women, the first multicultural anthology of women’s poetry. She led the Voices of Fire Reading Choir from 1987 to 1999. She has twice won Rattle’s Poets Respond. Her poem “Endangered” serves as lyric to the 2017 International Student LiedDuo Competition composition. She was a volunteer leader for Amnesty International and loves science fiction. She exhibits her art work regularly and has published over 120 crochet patterns. Akua has given hundreds of readings to audiences in colleges, prisons, parks, museums, libraries, and bars. She founded a paratransit nonprofit so that folks like her could get around her small upstate New York town.
