Nicole Shawan Junior (Smith College BA | Pace University MST | Temple University JD) was born and bred in the bass-heavy beat and scratch of Brooklyn, where the cool of beautiful inner-city life barely survived cripplings caused by crack cocaine. She is a black, queer and poverty-born counter-storyteller, felon and former police prosecutor.

Junior’s writing appears in Emerge (Lambda Literary’s 2019 Emerging Voices Anthology) Gay Mag (Roxane Gay’s platform with Medium), Zora, Color Bloq, For Harriet, The Feminist Wire, Rigorous Magazine, and more. Nicole has received numerous fellowships and residencies from organizations including the New York Foundation for the Arts, Hedgebrook, Lambda Literary, Sundress Academy for the Arts, and more. She is an alumna of various literary conferences including Bread Loaf and Hurston/Wright. Junior’s currently completing her memoir, Cracked Concrete: A Memoir of Crackheads, Cousins & Crime. Letitia Trent has been nominated for a Shirley Jackson award, and her nominated short story “Wilderness” appeared in Volume 8 of Best Horror of the Year. Trent lives in an Ozark mountain town with her husband, son, two black cats, and one very silly dog named Sally. She works in the mental health field.

Her work includes the poetry collections Match Cut and One Perfect Bird (Sundress Publications) and the chapbooks the ghost comes with me (Ghost City Press) and The Women in Charge (dancing girl press). Her short stories, poetry, and nonfiction have appeared in The Daily Beast, Ghost Proposal, Diagram, Waxwing, Smokelong Quarterly, The Jellyfish Review, and Hobart, among others.
